CHENNAI - Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will Wednesday begin a two-day trip to Tamil Nadu to enthuse more youth and women into joining the party.
Gandhi will meet the office bearers of the state youth wing here Wednesday morning and later interact with intellectuals at a city hotel.
He will also visit Villupuram and Madurai to meet office bearers of the party’s youth wing there.
On Thursday, Gandhi will meet Youth Congress office bearers of Tirunelvelli, Tirupur and Coimbatore districts. He concludes his trip after meeting women and Youth Congress officials in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) district.
According to Youth Congress officials, the MP from Amethi is expected to discuss strategies for the party’s growth as well as preparations for the upcoming assembly elections.
The Youth Congress in Tamil Nadu is 1.4 million strong. Party officials told IANS that they are now focusing on increasing the membership base.
The tour comes in the backdrop of an intensification of the 2G spectrum scam probe, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Dec 15 raiding a host of people associated with disgraced former communications minister and DMK member A. Raja, including an NGO linked to prominent DMK MP Kanimozhi, who is the daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Gandhi is not scheduled to meet DMK president and key Congress ally Karunanidhi.
