NEW DELHI - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ask him to recall Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, a party official said Tuesday.

“Our leaders have sought the appointment,” a party leader told IANS.

BJP’s L.K. Advani, party president Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley want to meet Manmohan Singh, the source said.

“We would like to impress upon the prime minister that Governor Bhardwaj is acting like an opposition leader in Karnataka. He must be recalled,” the official told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

The BJP government in Karnataka has been in the thick of a crisis since 11 of its legislators, along with five Independents, rebelled against the leadership of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

The chief minister won a confidence motion in the state assembly by voice vote amid chaotic scenes Monday, prompting the governor to recommend President’s Rule in the state.

On Tuesday, the governor gave Yeddyurappa a “fresh opportunity” to prove majority in the house Thursday.
