NEW DELHI - National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah Wednesday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had praised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s work during the all-party meeting on the Kashmir crisis.
“Meeting was very good. The work done by Omar’s government has been praised by the prime minister and the commission,” Farooq Abdullah told reporters after the all-party meet concluded at the prime minister’s 7 Race Course Road official residence.
“The meeting has been successful and was held in a good atmosphere,” added Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah’s father.
“Whatever statement comes out will also be good. Home ministry and state government will welcome the all-party delegation,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.
The five-hour long meeting was called to discuss measures to defuse the volatile situation in the valley, where 88 people, mainly teenagers and youth, have died in violent protests since June 11.
It was decided at the meet that an all-party delegation will visit the troubled Kashmir Valley to “meet all sections of people and gather all shades of opinions”, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said.
The meeting, chaired by Manmohan Singh and attended by top leaders of various parties, including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders L.K. Advani and Nitin Gadkari, decided to have a first-hand impression of the state before deciding on any major measure to restore normalcy.
The meeting took no decision on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
