KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has said that the incident in which school teachers forced a female Muslim student to wear headscarf should have been avoided.

Yassin, who is also the Education Minister, said that there are no Education Ministry policy forcing female Muslim students to wear any headscarf.

“If families feel their children need not wear the tudung, that’s up to them. This is an individual choice,” The Star quoted Yassin, as saying.

He further said that force should not be applied in matters involving religion.

“More so during the fasting month when we should avoid all things negative such as anger,” Yassin said.

According to reports, teachers at S.M. St. Anne Secondary School in Labuan had resorted to harassing students who did wear a headscarf. (ANI)
