Judge confirms same ballots in Ill. Sen. elections
CHICAGO — A federal judge says Illinois’ special election for President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat will feature the same candidates who qualified for the regular election.
It also will exclude Democratic Sen. Roland Burris.
The special election will be held the same day as the Nov. 2 regular election. Monday’s ruling came as part of a lawsuit that said the U.S. Constitution required Illinois to call a special election for Obama’s seat after he resigned even though a temporary replacement was named.
Burris has chosen not to seek a full term. But his attorney had argued for ways to let the Senate’s only black member be on the special election ballot so he could serve until January.
U.S. District Judge John Grady says the two ballots should be the same.
