Mayor Daley lays out strict gun rules for Chicago
CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is introducing what the city says is the most comprehensive gun ordinance in the United States.
At a news conference Thursday, Daley said the ordinance would include a ban on gun shops in the city and prohibit guns from anywhere except inside the owner’s home.
That would mean owners couldn’t bring a gun into a garage, yard or porch.
The ordinance would bar gun ownership for anyone convicted of a violent crime or with two or more convictions for drunken driving.
Daley is moving quickly after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling Monday that effectively makes Chicago’s 28-year-old handgun ban unenforceable.
The proposal will go to a committee Thursday before the full city council votes on it Friday.
