TORONTO - Visiting Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the victims of Kanishka’s air crash, the Air India’s trans-Atlantic flight, deserved full justice.
He said this on the sidelines of his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at Toronto on Sunday.
Earlier, the Indian premier had signed a civil- nuclear agreement with Canada.
“My visit to Canada coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Kanishka air crash. This terrible disaster and the suffering it has led to will forever remain a stark reminder of the need for all of us to work unitedly to eliminate this scourge of terrorism. The victims of this ghastly tragedy deserve full justice,” Dr. Singh said.
A suitcase bomb destroyed Air India Flight 182 off Ireland’s Atlantic coast on June 23, 1985, while the aircraft was en route from Canada to India via London. Many of the victims were Canadian citizens returning to India to visit relatives.
The Indian Prime Minister also mentioned that he and the Canadian premier have also resolved to aim a target of 15 billion dollars within the next five years in bilateral trade.
“We’ve also decided to focus, as I said, on mining and agriculture as the other priority areas of corporation. We have re-affirmed our resolve to achieve the annual bilateral trade target of 15 billion dollars within the next five years and to encourage two-way flow of investment,” added Dr. Singh.
Prime Minister Dr. Singh is in Canada for the G-20 summit.
The G20 is made up of the Finance Ministers and Governors of respective central banks of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Republic of Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America and the European Union.
