10 people killed by guns in Chicago since Friday
CHICAGO — Chicago’s mayor says a spate of shootings that have left 10 people dead and dozens wounded bolsters his argument that city needs its handgun ban.
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on whether the 1982 ban is constitutional.
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley said Tuesday that the recent violence proves the city must continue its fight against handguns even if the high court strikes down the ban.
Chicago officials have said that if the Supreme Court rules against the city, they would alter gun restrictions to make them constitutional.
Officials say 10 people have been killed and more than 60 others wounded by gunfire since Friday. Daley says about 75 percent of the recent shootings involved people who knew each other.
