UN Security Council reform inevitable: Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO - The structure of United Nations Security Council reflects the reality of 65 years ago and a reform in the world body is inevitable, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim has said.

The UN Security Council should make changes to reflect the current global situation as its structure reflects the reality of 65 years ago, Amorim said Monday

“The reform is inevitable,” he said. “If you ask me (when it will happen), I will not be able to say, but it is not plausible to keep it the way it is.”

According to Xinhua, the Brazilian minister also criticised the sanctions the Security Council has approved against Iran over the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.

The punitive measures came despite a swap deal Tehran had signed with Brazil and Turkey which would allow Iran to ship much of its 1.2 tons of low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for higher enriched uranium, he said.

“The goal (of the agreement) was to build trust, but it was not taken into consideration,” said Amorim, whose country and Turkey were the only countries that voted against the sanctions.
