Iran vows to keep enriching uranium, defying new UN curbs

VIENNA - A senior Iranian diplomat said Wednesday his country would continue its controversial uranium enrichment process, defying new UN Security Council measures aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear programme.

“The enrichment activities will not be suspended even for a second,” said Iran’s envoy at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Asghar Soltanieh.

Iran would continue operating its enrichment plant under the monitoring of the IAEA, he said.

Holding the United States responsible for pushing for sanctions, Soltanieh said, “Iran has not listened to the dictated messages and instructions from Washington.”

The security council passed a new round of punitive measures Wednesday in New York, reacting to Iran’s expansion of its nuclear programme and its refusal to clear up allegations of nuclear weapons development projects.
