DHAKA - Bangladesh’s main opposition party Wednesday announced a nationwide general strike for June 27 to protest what it says the Awami League-led ruling coalition’s failure in running the state affairs.
Opposition leader and chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Khaleda Zia, announced the dusk-to-dawn shutdown at an anti-government rally attended by several thousand people in Dhaka.
“This programme I am announcing today is just a warning for the government. Tough actions will follow if the government tries to foil our protests,” the opposition leader told the gathering at Dhaka’s Paltan Ground.
It is the first general strike announced by Zia-led opposition alliance against the Awami League-led ruling coalition of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed who assumed office in early January 2009.
