Gingrich: New Orleans ‘testbed of gov’t failure’

OXON HILL, Md. — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says New Orleans has become the “testbed of government failure,” singling out the Bush administration’s failures during Hurricane Katrina and President Barack Obama’s handling of the Gulf oil spill.

The Georgia Republican said Tuesday that Washington’s failure to cope with crisis is a reason why voters are angry at lawmakers and one reason why Republicans could see gains in November. He said President George W. Bush’s handling of Katrina was a reason why his credibility faltered and Obama could face a similar scenario.

Gingrich spoke to national GOP leaders near Washington and said he sees parallels between the presidencies of Obama and Jimmy Carter, who was voted out of office amid an economic crisis.
