Exhibition opens at former center of Nazi state
BERLIN — Visitors to Berlin can now tour the site where the Gestapo, SS and other Nazi agencies ran the machinery of Adolf Hitler’s dictatorship from 1933 to 1945.
Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit said at Thursday’s official opening of a new exhibition center that the site illustrates that liberty, democracy and civil rights must be defended on a daily basis.
Wowereit said the remnants of the Nazi empire that are at the heart of the “Topography of Terror” exhibition are grim reminders not only of the perpetrators, but also of the millions of Jews and others killed by the Nazis.
The exhibition documents how Hitler’s security agencies tightly controlled the police state and how Germans dealt with the dark chapter of history in the aftermath of World War II.
