NJ teens, lawmakers hope to stop driver decal law

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey teens opposed to the nation’s first state law requiring young drivers to display special license plate decals are getting help from state lawmakers and a national youth rights advocacy group.

The law requiring drivers ages 16 to 20 to display the decals goes into effect Saturday.

It’s intended to help police enforce restrictions on when young people can drive and how many young passengers can ride with them. But opponents say it’ll be a nuisance and might expose teens to predators.

Three Assembly Republicans are planning to introduce a bill that would rescind the decal requirement.

The National Youth Rights Association is trying to thwart the law by asking drivers to buy and display the decals even if they aren’t required to.
