Kan. House fails to override veto on abortion law
TOPEKA, Kan. — Lawmakers in the Kansas House have failed to override the governor’s veto of a bill regarding late-term abortions.
Friday’s vote was two short of overturning Gov. Mark Parkinson’s action. Republican supporters of the measure said they would move to reconsider the override on Monday.
No doctor in Kansas is known to have been performing late-term abortions since the murder last year of Dr. George Tiller.
The measure would require doctors to give the state more details about abortions performed after the 21st week of pregnancy and involving fetuses considered viable. It also would allow patients or family members to sue doctors if they have evidence an abortion violated state law.
The Senate will vote only if the House is successful. Chances for an override in the Senate seem more remote.
