Austria: No advance help for Greece

VIENNA — Austria’s finance minister says his country will only provide funds to debt-stricken Greece in unison with other countries.

Josef Proell was quoted by the Austria Press Agency Tuesday as saying that legal means are in place to transfer funds but that Austria won’t make any payments until the solidarity of all states is achieved and “we act together.” He says Greece must also first meet all conditions set by the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.

Austria has said it was prepared to provide up to euro858 million ($1.14 billion), in line with a eurozone agreement.

A euro45 billion bailout from eurozone countries and the IMF should see Greece through its borrowing needs for 2010. But the rescue is complicated by German grumbling about the burden of the bailout.
