Justice Breyer tells Duke law students court nominees should listen, avoid being clever

Justice Breyer has advice for Obama court nominee

DURHAM, N.C. — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is giving out advice for anyone hoping to be his newest colleague.

Breyer spoke at Duke University Law School in North Carolina on Wednesday and said the best way for nominees to get through the Senate confirmation process is to listen to senators’ questions and try to not to get clever with their answers.

Breyer, who has been on the court since 1994, also talked about topics ranging from his childhood to how he approaches the law.

The confirmation process is set to begin this summer after Justice John Paul Stevens retires. Breyer says he’ll be sorry to see the veteran judge go.

President Obama is considering about 10 candidates to replace Stevens.
