Obama, Brown considering Mass. basketball meetup

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Could President Barack Obama use the basketball court to avenge a Democrat’s loss in a key Senate race?

Spokesmen for Obama and new Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown say they’re studying an invitation for a matchup by the mayor of basketball’s birthplace.

Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno (SAHR’-no) says in a letter Wednesday to the White House that “there are many charities in Springfield that would benefit greatly from the money this type of event would raise.”

Brown is a Republican who upset a Democrat last month to claim the Senate seat long held by the late Edward Kennedy.

He later challenged the basketball-loving president to a game featuring two female players, including Brown’s daughter Ayla (AY’-luh). She plays for Boston College.
