PANAJI - Former Lok Sabha Speakar P.A. Sangma Saturday expressed unhappiness that there was no prime minister from the lower house of parliament for several years now.
“I am a strong believer of the parliamentary system of government, but in the last 15 years, I am a very disappointed man,” Sangma, a senior leader of the National Congress Party (NCP) said at the party’s convention held in Goa.
“I am saying that in a parliamentary system, a country must elect its prime minister from the lower house, Sangma, whose NCP is a part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, said.
Juxtaposing the Indian political scenario with Britain, Sangma said: “In Britain, one can never think of having a prime minister from the House of Lords. It is unthinkable,” he said.
Manmohan Singh, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha, has been the prime minister since 2004.
