AMRITSAR - Making his maiden visit to this Sikh holy city after taking over as Punjab’s new governor, former central minister Shivraj Patil Thursday paid his respects at the “Harmandar Sahib”, popularly known as Golden Temple.

Patil bowed at the shrine and walked around the “parkarma” before paying obeisance at the sanctum sanctorum.

The governor was later given a “siropa” (robe of honour) by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar.

Patil later visited the nearby Hindu shrine, Durgiana Temple.

He also visited the historical Jallianwala Bagh, the place where hundreds of unarmed Indians attending peaceful pro-Independence meeting were massacred by British forces April 13, 1919.
