Brazil’s Green Party to raise funds on the Web

RIO DE JANEIRO - The Green Party has said that it would be the first political party in Brazil to create an Internet-based fundraising system.

Congress amended the election law in September, opening the way for political parties to use the web to raise money for campaigns.

Parties can use the web to distribute campaign materials for candidates running in the October 2010 presidential and legislative elections.

The Green Party said Tuesday it would be the first political party to use its website to raise funds to cover campaign costs and expand efforts to bring transparency to its operations.

The minimum contribution accepted on the website will be 20 reais (about $11), with all contributions listed on the site, the Green Party said.

Brazilian parties are apparently taking their cue from US President Barack Obama, whose 2008 campaign received more than half its contributions via the Web.
