AMBALA - Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) newly elected Haryana legislator Anil Vij surrendered to the police Friday after he was booked for allegedly causing a traffic jam on a national highway.
Vij, who has been elected from the Ambala Cantonment assembly seat, was arrested along with some of his supporters after he went to the Ambala Cantonment police station to surrender with hundreds of backers, police said.
Vij had been booked by the Haryana police for causing a traffic jam on the Ambala-Jagadhri highway earlier this week after a supporter was beaten by the police.
Vij and nearly 100 other supporters were also booked for obstructing policemen from performing their duty.
“Anil Vij has been arrested after he came to the police station to surrender,” Ambala district police chief Bharti Arora told IANS.
Two Ambala councillors, who were also booked by the police, were arrested Wednesday.
BJP leaders said the Haryana police was acting at the behest of the state’s ruling Congress as its leaders could not digest Vij’s victory in last months assembly poll.
