MYSORE - Former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa Thursday offered special prayers to Hindu goddess Chamundeswari atop the Chamundi hills here to mark her 63rd birthday.

Jayalalithaa, who is preparing to face the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in a couple of months, declined to take political questions, saying she had come to worship the goddess.

“I have come here purely on a private visit to worship goddess Chamundeshwari,” she said.

The goddess is an ‘avatar’ of Parvati, wife of Shiva. Legend has it Parvati took on the form of Chamundeshwari to slay demon Mahishasura.

Chamundi hills and the Chamundeshwari temple in this city of palaces, about 140 kms from Bangalore, are major tourist attractions.
