GANDHINAGAR - Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Ganpat Vasava was unanimously elected the speaker of the Gujarat assembly here Thursday.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi said the election of Vasava, a tribal from the reserved constituency of Mangrol, was an unprecedented event.

He added that Vasava’s election set a high precedent in parliamentary democracy, particularly on the state’s golden jubilee year.

Modi said that not many people knew about Vasava’s contributions as a social worker who motivated the tribal community to go to schools, take part in sports and stay away from addictions.

As a legislator too, Modi said, Vasavas conduct for the two successive terms has been exemplary.

The chief minister also paid his respects to the late speaker Ashok Bhatt.
