KOLKATA - As West Bengal gets ready for state assembly polls, 100 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will arrive in phases from Feb 20 to maintain law and order, said a senior state police officer Wednesday.
“The central government has informed us that 100 companies of the CRPF, sought for maintaining law and order situation in the state, will start arriving in phases from Feb 20,” said state Additional Director General of Police for law and order Surajit Kar Purkayastha.
The CRPF will arrive in the state even before the Election Commission issues notification for the assembly polls and fixes dates, he said.
West Bengal has been witnessing a series of political violence over the past few months.
The full bench of the Election Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Y.S. Qureshi, visited the state to assess the situation and proposed to deploy the CRPF.
Later, a six-member high-level Election Commission team toured the trouble-torn areas of the state. It will soon submit its report to the commission, which will then finalise the poll time table.
