Congress Party workers, who had gathered here in large numbers to welcome Gandhi, protested against the Mayawati Government over the rising rape cases in the state.
Rahul Gandhi arrived here to visit the minor Dalit girl, who was brutally disfigured after she resisted gang rape.
According to reports, several media persons were also injured in the incident.
A team of special protection group personnel had earlier taken positions in and around the surgical complex of GSVM Medical College, where the victim’s family was also kept under heavy security.
Sarika, 17, had to pay with physical torture for resisting gangrape by three youths of her own village, Udauli in Fatehpur, about 60 kilometers from Kanpur, late on Saturday evening when she was returning from the fields along with her friend Chaya.
The girl was seriously injured when three youths chopped off her nose, ear and a part of her hand after she resisted a rape attempt.
The youths - Shivom, Hari Shanker and Pawan - forcibly dragged her when she had gone out for some work in a field and tried to rape her on Saturday. (ANI)
