NEW DELHI - Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj will go to Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu Feb 4 to meet the family of a fisherman who was “tortured and killed” allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.

I am going to Nagapattinam on Feb 4 to meet the bereaved family of our fisherman who was tortured and killed, Swaraj wrote on her Twitter page.

Swaraj’s visit comes at a time when the killing of Indian fishermen has evoked strong political reactions in Tamil Nadu, which will face assembly polls in about three months.

Swaraj is the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Two Indian fishermen have been killed allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy this month. However, Sri Lanka has denied that its navy was responsible for the incidents.

While a fisherman was shot dead off Jagadhapattinam coast Jan 12, another fisherman was killed Jan 22 night off the Vedaranyam coast in Nagapattinam district.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is paying a two-day visit to Sri Lanka from Sunday to discuss the issue and press the island state’s leadership to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
