NEW DELHI - A delegation of MPs from Delhi will meet Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna Monday to protest the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) proposal to collect house tax from residents of unauthorised colonies.

The delegation led by Northeast Delhi MP J.P. Agarwal will meet Khanna at 3 p.m. at the Raj Niwas.

“MCD has proposed to collect house tax from unauthorised colonies. How can MCD collect house tax from areas where no civic facilities are provided,” said a member of the Congress’ Delhi unit.

In November 2010, MCD said it would collect taxes from villages and unauthorised colonies, but the notification had to be withdrawn in the face of opposition from its Standing Committee members who expressed themselves against taxing the “poor”.
