NEW DELHI - The Congress Friday appointed party general secretary Digvijay Singh as in-charge of the party’s afairs in Assam in place of Law Minister M. Veerapa Moily.
Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi, who heads the party media department, said Singh will be the new general secretary for Assam.
A party source said the change has been made in view of the assembly elections in Assam next year.
The source said Moily had heavy engagements as a minister and as party in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, and the party needed a leader who could spend more time in Assam to galvanise the preparations for the polls.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Congress is dealing with the impact of resignation of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy from the party. Reddy, son of former Chief Minister Y.S.R. Reddy, quit the party and his Lok sabha seat earlier this week.
