PANAJI - Days after police booked him for assaulting a party legislator in an ugly public brawl, state Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Jose Phillip DSouza Sunday resigned from his party post.

Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation to the party’s central leadership in New Delhi, DSouza said he had already offered to resign after the spat with former tourism minister and NCP legislator Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco Oct 26.

DSouza, who was elected the state president in June this year, was booked by the police for assaulting Mickky at a restaurant in Vasco, 35 km from here, and triggering a riot-like situation during the run-up to the local municipal elections held earlier this month.

The NCP has three legislators in the 40-member Goa legislative assembly. DSouza is also the leader of the partys legislative wing.
