Indira Gandhi Remembered On Death Anniversary

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- On the 26th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a number of dignitaries paid their homage to the Congress leader at her samadhi ‘Shakti Shthal’ in New Delhi today. With the aim of commemorating that death anniversary of the esteemed leader, a series of program have been lined up in cities across the nation. Apart from the national capital, the slain former Prime Minister was remembered by leaders in Congress offices all over the country.

In order to pay homage to Indira Gandhi on the occasion of her 26th death anniversary, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh as well President Pratibha Patil went to ‘Shakti Shthal’ on Sunday morning. Apart from them, the other political leaders who were present to offer their floral tributes include Congress president and NAC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Vice President M. Hamid Ansari as well as Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar. After all the imminent leader had paid their tributes, all of them gathered at the seating area at the venue where the former Prime Minister was remembered amidst devotional songs. To mark Indira Gandhi’s death anniversary, a special program was also organized at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum in the national capital which was also graced by a many prominent personalities.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984 just outside her New Delhi residence while she was on her way to party office. The Congress leader’s death resulted in violent riots in which thousands of Sikhs lost their lives.
