Haryana institutes awards for women

CHANDIGARH - The Haryana government Sunday announced institution of three awards for women, including one in the name of astronaut Kalpana Chawla who hailed from Karnal town in the state.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has approved the three awards which will honour those women who excel in various fields and show exemplary courage.

Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said three state-level awards — Indira Gandhi Mahila Shakti award, Kalpana Chawla Shaurya award and Bahin Shanno Devi Panchyati Raj award– have been instituted.

While the Indira Gandhi award will be given to those women who excel in selfless service to society and are a role model for others. This award will carry a cash prize of Rs.100,000, the other two will be worth Rs.51,000 each.

The Kalpana Chawla Shaurya award would be given to those women who show exemplary courage risking their own lives.

Yadav said that Bahin Shanno Devi Panchyati Raj award has been named after the first woman speaker in Haryana. This award would be given to those women panchayat leaders who excel in the field of women empowerment.
