NYT/CBS poll: Ohio governor race tightening

TOLEDO, Ohio — A new poll shows Ohio Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland and GOP challenger John Kasich (KAY’-sik) are about even in one of the most closely watched governor’s races in the country.

The New York Times/CBS News poll released Tuesday showed that among registered voters surveyed, 42 percent favored Strickland while 43 percent endorsed Kasich.

Polls four weeks ago showed Strickland falling far behind Kasich, mainly because Ohio voters are unhappy with the lack of jobs. Kasich had a slight lead in a poll last weekend by Ohio’s eight largest newspapers.

In the last month, Strickland has released a series of positive ads aimed at tapping into frustration over the economy. He’s also been joined on the campaign trail in recent weeks by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
