LONDON - Ed Miliband was Saturday chosen to be the next leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party in a tight contest with his older brother, David.

Ed Miliband, 40, takes over the leadership of the main opposition party after Labour was ousted in the general election in May, following 13 years in power.

The former energy and climate change secretary narrowly became the last-minute surprise winner after a four-month contest dominated by the Miliband brothers.

The siblings embraced after the vote was announced in Manchester, on the eve of Labour’s annual party conference.

David Miliband, a former foreign secretary, had been the front-runner in the race, but later lost ground to his trades union-backed brother.

The new leader is facing an uphill struggle to rebuild Labour’s role in British politics, and to organize a strong and credible opposition to the Conservative-Liberal coalition set up in May.
