RAIPUR - Chhattisgarh’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded a woman candidate, Rajni Tripathi, for the by-poll to the Bhatgaon assembly seat.

The opposition Congress has picked U.S. Singhdeo of the erstwhile royal family of Surguja as its candidate.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of BJP leader and Bhatgaon legislator Ravi Shankar Tripathi, 55, in a car crash in April. The BJP candidate, Rajni, is wife of the late legislator.

The assembly constituency, in the tribal district of Surguja, is scheduled to go to the polls Oct 1.

The BJP candidate as well as the Congress nominee filed papers Monday, the last date for nominations. The BJP has 47 members in the 90-member state assembly while the Congress has 39 and the Bahujan Samaj Party has two. Two seats are vacant.
