Tamil Nadu MPs performed well in parliament’s monsoon session

CHENNAI - Lok Sabha members from Tamil Nadu gave a good performance during the recently concluded monsoon session of parliament - coming second only to fellow members from Maharashtra, points out a research.
According to data compiled by New Delhi-based PRS Legislative Research, 31 MPs from Tamil Nadu scored an overall tally of 32.70 points as against 32.80 scored by MPs from Maharashtra. The score was calculated after including points on questions raised, participation in debates and private members’ bills.
Sixty-year-old first time MP S.S. Ramasubbu led fellow members from Tamil Nadu in terms of performance.
Ramasubbu of the Congress party, representing the Tirunelvelli constituency, raised 76 questions, participated in 12 debates and had an attendance of 88 percent during the monsoon session.
Speaking to IANS, Ramasubbu said: “My questions were on agriculture, power shortage in the country, farm procurement prices and the status of Kudankulam nuclear power project.”
Scoring the second rank amongst Tamil Nadu MPs was P. Vishwanathan, 46, from Kanchipuram constituency. He raised 74 questions, participated in one debate and had an attendance of 62 percent.
The third and fourth spots were taken by DMK members E.G. Sugavanam (72 questions and 2 debates) and R. Thamaraiselvan (55 questions and 7 debates) representing Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri constituencies, respectively.
Three MPs - DMK’s T.K.S. Elangovan, AIADMK’s K. Murugesa Anandan and Congress’ Manicka Tagore - secured 100 percent attendance marks.
At the lower end four MPs - AIADMK’s O.S. Manian, P. Venugopal, DMK’s T.R. Baalu and Dhanapal Venugopal - did not raise any questions but participated in debates in a small measure.
