Chandigarh, neighbouring states celebrate I-Day

CHANDIGARH - Hundreds of people and policemen Sunday took part in Independence Day celebrations in Punjab, Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh amid enthusiasm and fervour as well as light showers.
The national flag was unfurled by Chandigarh administrator Shivraj Patil at the Parade Ground here. He took the guard of honour at an impressive parade.
Students in traditional and colourful dresses presented lively performances in the backdrop of patriotic songs.
There was keen participation by people as well as personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Punjab Armed Police, Haryana Armed Police, Chandigarh Police and National Cadet Corps.
Patil appreciated the Chandigarh administration’s initiatives in social welfare and emphasised on the need of saving Sukhna Lake, one of the most sought after tourist destination here.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal unfurled the national flag at Ferozepur city, some 300 km from here.
Badal highlighted various projects in the fields of education, health and rural development while addressing the gathering.
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal hoisted the flag in Punjab’s Bathinda city.
Similar passion was seen during Independence Day celebrations in Haryana. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda hoisted the tricolour in Narnaul town.
