Obama hails Kagan’s ascension to Supreme Court
CHICAGO — President Barack Obama says Elena Kagan’s confirmation to the Supreme Court is an affirmation of her character and judicial tempermant.
The Senate confirmed Kagan Thursday as the court’s 112th justice and its fourth woman. Obama says the appointment of another woman is a sign of progress for the country.
Kagan succeeds retired Justice John Paul Stevens. She is Obama’s second nominee on the court, joining Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Obama spoke in Chicago, where he visited a Ford auto plant and headlined a series of Democratic fundraisers.
