Detroit officials, TV drama producers to meet

DETROIT — Producers of a crime show set and filmed in Detroit are expected to meet with the City Council to hear concerns about the drama’s content.

Some council members have said they worry “Detroit 1-8-7″ will play on negative stereotypes. A meeting is scheduled Tuesday afternoon.

The title uses a former California police code for homicide and is set to air in September. The ABC Network show is shot from the perspective of a documentary film crew tasked with shadowing Detroit homicide detectives.

Councilman Kwame Kenyatta says the title associates Detroit with murder.

Detroit has been unable to shake its reputation of being a violent city, despite reductions in violent crime. More than 700 homicides were committed in 1974. Last year, the city recorded 364 criminal homicides.
