Kagan says she respects limits of court power
WASHINGTON — Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan says the Supreme Court has limits in deciding cases and that she will respect that role if confirmed as a justice.
Kagan says justices have a duty to recognize the limits of what courts can do as well as the “choices made by the American people.” She says her past work in government public service has shown her that, in her words, “no one has a monopoly on truth and wisdom.”
Kagan spoke Monday at her Senate confirmation hearings, where several senators have signaled they would ask her just how activist the high court should be.
