Kagan pledges to hear cases with an open mind
WASHINGTON — Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan is pledging that if confirmed she will decide cases conscientiously, impartially and with an open mind.
Kagan addressed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, the first day of her confirmation hearings. She praised retiring Justice John Paul Stevens and what she called his “proven commitment to the rule of law.”
She says that is a quality that all judges should adhere to and that she will always strive to listen to cases with a mind as open as his.
Kagan also says she is honored and humbled to be nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Stevens.
