Papers in Europe weather crisis better than US
PARIS — A new report suggests that U.S. newspapers should look to their European counterparts for tips on how to weather the ongoing crisis in print media.
The report, by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, shows that U.S. newspapers are the biggest losers among the papers in the world’s most industrialized countries.
The U.S. newspaper publishing market declined 30 percent between 2007-2009, the report released Monday says. Yet the newspaper publishing market declined 9 percent in Germany and just 2 percent in Austria during the same period.
Newspapers outside the developing world continue to grow, with circulation climbing steadily in recent years in emerging powerhouses like Brazil, India and China.
