Veteran northeast tribal leader dies in Tripura

AGARTALA - Veteran northeast tribal leader Shyama Charan Tripura, 71, died here Friday at the Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and Hospital.
A renowned writer and political analyst of northeast India, Tripura was not keeping well fo the past few days. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters, a family source said.
Respected widely, the leader had spearheaded the tribal movement in the northeastern state of Tripura for many years and was elected to the state assembly in 1983, 1998 and 2003.
The cremation was held Friday evening at his ancestral home at Mainama in northern Tripura.
Former minister and Tripura’s son-in-law Rabindra Debbarma described the veteran leader as “a versatile intellectual”.
One of the founding members of Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS), a tribal party formed in June 1967, Tripura spent many years of his life in jail for organising agitations on various issues.
Tripura Governor D.Y. Patil, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and a large number of party leaders have condoled his death.
