Hawaii Army National Guard gets new commander

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii — Brig. Gen. Joseph J. Chaves has been named commander of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Chaves had been assistant adjutant general of thee Guard since May 2009. He is to be promoted to the rank of major general on Sunday.

Chaves enlisted in the Guard in 1970, earning his commission as a second lieutenant from the Hawaii Military Academy three years later. Since then, he has held a variety of command and staff positions.

Chaves was activated for federal service in 2004, serving as the commander of the 29th Brigade Combat Team in Iraq until 2006.

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii (AP) — Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Chaves has been named U.S. Army, Pacific deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard.

U.S. Army, Pacific Chief of Staff Col. A. Thomas Ball announced Chaves’ promotion Tuesday morning after Chaves pinned on his second star. Chaves has been assistant adjutant general of the Hawaii Army National Guard since May 2009.

He enlisted in the Guard in 1970, earning his commission as a second lieutenant from the Hawaii Military Academy three years later. Since then, he has held a variety of command and staff positions.

Chaves was activated for federal service in 2004, serving as the commander of the 29th Brigade Combat Team in Iraq until 2006.
