Leahy, Sessions to set Kagan hearings this week

WASHINGTON — The senators in charge of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan’s confirmation will meet this week to decide when to begin the hearings.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy, says he expects to set a schedule that would allow Kagan to be confirmed this summer.

Kagan is now solicitor general, the top government lawyer who argues the administration’s cases before the Supreme Court.

The top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, tells ABC’s “This Week” that Kagan’s testimony will be very important to her confirmation chances because of her lack of judicial experience. Kagan has never been a judge.

Kagan is President Barack Obama’s pick to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.
