AP: Abortion rights group endorses Specter foe

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The national abortion-rights group NARAL says its political action committee is endorsing Sen. Arlen Specter’s challenger in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

Wednesday’s endorsement by NARAL Pro-Choice America goes to U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, even though Republican-turned-Democrat Specter touts his record of standing up for abortion rights.

NARAL officials say they’re unaware of ever having endorsed Specter during his five terms in the Senate.

NARAL’s political director Elizabeth Shipp says Sestak’s votes on abortion issues during his two terms in Congress leave no question of where he stands.

She says Specter tends to vote in line with NARAL as a matter of convenience, rather than conviction.

The groups says it has more than 250,000 identified supporters in Pennsylvania.
