Liberal activist challenges Brown in CA gov’s race
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A founder of the liberal activist group MoveOn.org says he will challenge Democrat Jerry Brown for the party’s nomination for governor.
Peter Schurman says Brown isn’t being bold enough in his plans to fix California.
Brown is a former governor who is now the state’s attorney general. He faces no other serious challengers in the June Democratic primary.
Republican candidate Meg Whitman has spent $46 million so far, while Brown has made some Democrats nervous because he has barely campaigned.
Schurman, who is 40 and lives in San Francisco, announced his candidacy Tuesday. He says the Democratic nominee must take bold stands, such as forcing corporations and the rich to pay their fair share.
He supports raising taxes and ending the two-thirds vote requirement to pass budgets.
