Group led by justice’s wife cited for fundraising
RICHMOND, Va. — Consumer protection officials say a Virginia-based conservative advocacy group led by the wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been raising money without first registering with state regulators.
Virginia’s Office of Consumer Affairs sent a letter Thursday to Virginia Thomas, president of Liberty Central Inc., informing her the group hadn’t registered as required by law. J. Michael Wright, the office’s manager of regulatory programs, says the group’s lawyer told him the paperwork would be sent Friday.
Wright says officials usually work to get organizations to comply before seeking sanctions.
The group says it was waiting to be established as a nonprofit before registering. Its nonprofit status was confirmed Thursday.
