HYDERABAD - Congress MP Sabbam Hari Thursday targeted party president Sonia Gandhi’s family and warned that people would destroy the Congress if former MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy was harmed.

“When Indira Gandhi was assassinated, her son Rajiv Gandhi took oath as prime minister even before her cremation. It was then democracy. But when Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy died, his son Y.S. Jaganomhan Reddy was not made the chief minister though 155 MLAs signed a letter demanding this,” said the MP from Ankapalli.

He was addressing a public meeting along with Jagan at Polavaram in East Godavari district to mark the culmination of the latter’s 70 km “Harita Yatra” to demand national project status to the proposed Polavaram dam across the Godavari river.

“When Rajiv Gandhi was killed, his name was dropped from Bofors case,” said Sabbam Hari, while criticizing a section of Congress leaders for alleging corruption during Rajasekhara Reddy’s rule.

Rajasekhara Reddy died in a helicopter crash Sep 2, 2009.

The MP said the Congress had destructed itself in the state after Jagan quit the party.

He alleged that that a conspiracy was being hatched to harass Jagan. “I am warning Congress that if any harm is caused to Jagan, people will uproot the party.”

Another MP, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, said people wanted to see Jagan as their leader.

Jagan, who plans to launch new party next month, trained his guns on the Congress-led government at the centre saying it was using Andhra Pradesh to be in power without helping the state.

The young leader said the Congress had 32 MPs from the state but none of them was given portfolios like railways and agriculture.
