MUMBAI - Maharashtra’s senior-most Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ajit Parasnis will be the new state director general of police (DGP) while Arup Patnaik has been appointed the new Mumbai police commissioner, official sources said here Monday.

The appointment of Parasnis, presently director general of Home Guards, is made as the present DGP D. Sivanandhan retired Monday.

Patnaik, presently additional director general of highway traffic police, has been appointed Mumbai police chief following the promotion of incumbent Sanjeev Dayal as the new director general of police for housing.

Both Parasnis and Patnaik have had varying stints in Mumbai and other parts of the state during their IPS career spanning over three decades.

With the two new key appointments announced Monday, it is expected that the Maharashtra home department may effect another round of reshuffle in the state police set-up.
